Embracing change requires confidence and confidence in your abilities.
If you struggle to embrace change and feel overwhelmed like many people, it may be due to a lack of confidence.
And with the world changing at a meteoric pace, causing previously unheard-of global disasters, it’s no wonder you feel overwhelmed.
And yet some people are not affected by all this change. Some are even thriving. So why are they so different?
How is it that they seem unbothered by the global change? And not only unbothered by it, but they also gain confidence and succeed.
Action Is The Obvious Way To Gain Confidence
According to Eric Hoffer in his book “The Ordeal Of Change,” a population subjected to drastic change is a population of misfits. They are unbalanced, explosive and hungry for action.
And action, Hoffer says, is the most obvious way to gain confidence and prove your worth. It is also a reaction against loss of balance.
So drastic change is one of the agencies that helps you release your energies. But certain conditions must be present if the shock of change is to turn you into a person of action.
And those conditions are:
- You must have an abundance of opportunities
- You must have a tradition of self-reliance
Given these conditions, you will plunge into an orgy of action when you are faced with a drastic change. So says Hoffer.
Gain Confidence, Satisfaction And Self-Worth
If misfits don’t have the right conditions to gain confidence and prove their worth, they must obtain it by sheer faith.
But there is a danger to substituting faith for skill.
For even if a person has a mediocre amount of skill, they can be satisfied with their self-worth and live contently.
But no amount of substitute in the form of faith will be enough to give that same person the satisfaction and self-worth for them to live contently.
Also, when people do not have sufficient self-worth, they feel weak. And when people feel weak, they show it with hatred, rudeness, intolerance, and suspicion.
